Mission Statement:" Bringing Business and the Community Together"…..

  • To provide a networking opportunity for all businesses
  • To promote open communication and support to all business and community leaders
  • To be a resource for information generated from County, City and State levels that have a direct Impact on our Business Community

President’s Message:

The OFBPA invites everyone to their Fall Business Networking Wine, Cheese and Pizza Social on Tuesday, October 9th at Amer’s Café ( located in the Belair Road Shopping Center) from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. Special thanks to Amy Foos (Arbonne); Angela Heydt (Apple Insurance) and Amy Funk-Hines ( Aflac) my "A" team for planning and coordinating this event. The fun begins with everyone receiving one playing card. Members are free and non-members are $5.00. October is membership month for new members and anyone joining now will automatically be rolled over to 2008—it’s like getting two months free. If you would like to be on our mailing list or email list, please visit our website at www.ofbpa.com or contact any of the officers.

Mark your calendar to attend the SHA Belair Road Rte 1 Streetscape Project Public Meeting at St. Michael’s the Archangel Church gym on October 10th from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Your attendance will be critical in moving ahead to the Design Phase. We encourage everyone to attend.

Don’t miss our monthly meeting at Brightview Assisted Living on October 17th at 4:30 pm. Come enjoy a "Taste of Brightview", and help us plan for 2008. We need the input of our businesses on what type of events you want for next year. Our grant process which allows up to hold most of our events is due the end of October, so time is of the essence. New directories will be available as well. We need your help to get them out in the community.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Your Neighborhood Community Night at Chuckle’s Bar & Grill. Danielle Quattrocche and her staff did a fabulous job of hosting our event. Special thanks to Pete’s Cycle, Amer’s Café, Rita’s Italian Ice, The Meadows Ice Cream and Mystickal Voyage for being our mystery businesses for our 1st annual Business Poker Run. Winners were Tom McLhinney (1st place), Brian Richardson (2nd place) and Shirley Bass (3rd place). Thanks to committee members Kim Durham, Cathy Kratovil, Tom McLhinney and Norm McCarthy for organizing this event and to Lisa Hogan and Melissa Kaiza who helped us get flyers out to everyone. Our Raven’s snow globe raffle winner was new member Mandee Ybarra and Senator Kathy Klausmeier won the Cal Ripkin 2131 photo collection. Thanks to all our businesses who donated items for our Chinese Auction and last but not least thanks to Jack Ryan for entertaining us all with some great music once the lights went down!

For all events and for membership forms visit our website at. www.ofbpa.com.or Donna at 410-665-6551.

Talked about the challenges they face with their population not only blind, but have multiple disabilities and his very dedicated staff. They serve over 800 K-12th (up to 21 years of age) students from all over MD and board approx. 200 during the week. Vehicle donations are welcome as they provide income for the school. BaltOween is on October 27th from 11:00 am- 5:00 pm. Admission is free. Looking for items for their silent auction. Also ads for their program book available.

Member Speaker: Passport Plus- Richard Mince-new edition is available and proceeds go to the OFBPA from the sales and on community night.

Member Speaker- Joe Kruse- Pete’s Cycle- Joe is very familiar with CMPZ (zoning process) and advised everyone to pay attention. If the zoning is changed—yes you may be "grandfathered in", but you will pay $2,000-$4,000 for a non-conforming use permit and if you go to sell your business your property value is extremely effected. This is your livelihood and everyone needs to pay attention to this process. Donna has contacted Laurie Hay and no zoning request had been posted as of today and she will send request made from the past 4 cycles.

In the spirit of the new school year and in the interest of promoting education on the American political system, Delegate Todd Schuler of Legislative District 8 is sponsoring a Youth Suffrage Essay Contest. Delegate Schuler is considering legislation that would lower the voting age form eighteen years of age to sixteen for Maryland state elections, but he wants to hear from those who would be affected.

High school students that live in Legislative District 8 and will not be of the age of eighteen before January 1st, 2008 are eligible for the contest. Students should submit a researched essay explaining why they feel the voting age should be lowered to sixteen. There is no minimum or maximum length for the essay and it should be submitted by January 1st, 2008. Essays should be sent to Delegate Schuler’s Annapolis office 6 Bladen Street (Rm. 305) Annapolis, Maryland 21401.

The winner of the contest will be selected on February 1st, 2008. If convinced by the essays Delegate Schuler will submit legislation that will reduce Maryland’s voting age. The winner of the contest will receive $250 in prize money and a trip to Annapolis for lunch at Harry Browne’s Restaurant and to witness the political process of Maryland’s General Assembly firsthand as they follow Delegate Schuler around to the House floor, Committee hearings and various meetings throughout the day. Influence the political process and witness government in action!

NRG Summit Follow Up: Thanks to Lisa Hogan and her connections that allowed the OFBPA to attend the NRG Summit in Columbia a few weeks ago. It was a fabulous event, well attended and very well organized. I have never attended something like this before and it was an interesting learning experience. FUNNY STORY: The only name badge I have is my Avon Representative name badge so I wore that to the networking event and took the OFBPA directories with me. Well when folks at the tables looked up and saw my name badge they blew me off and in fact some folks never stop talking among themselves to give me the courtesy of talking to me. So I very casually said "excuse me, I just want to introduce myself, I’m the president of the OFBPA and here is a copy of our directory. Wow, did I then get a different response then and most could not get up fast enough. I thought abut taking off my name badge, but decided I was having too much fun seeing the reactions to my Avon badge. So moral of the story, folks pre-judged me and little did they know that I run a $130,000+ business and have over 100 in my downline. So all in all it was a very interesting day. I will make a list of all the contacts I made and I’ll send as a separate attachment. In spite of the rude folks, there were some very interesting people and hopefully good contacts for everyone in the OFBPA as well. If interested in the Network Referral Group (NRG) the Towson University I NRG group, which meets Fridays at 10am at the Sandler Training Institute 16 Green Meadow Dr, Suite G103 Timonium, MD 21093. Please contact Mike at 443-756-9656. (Note: this is just one of many groups who meet in our area)

ActionCoach Follow Up: This was a little disappointing (or I misunderstood the PR on it). This was really a real estate business guru who shows you how to buy, fix up and reinvest or how to purchase companies. Granted he is a billionaire, but you need to have an interest in this type of business and some money to get started with.
